Trust status

Bedfordshire Probation Area became Bedfordshire Probation Trust 1 April 2010, in line with the Offender Management Act, which ruled that only those Probation Areas that had become trusts by this date could continue to provide probation services.

Out of the original 42 Probation Areas, 35 new trusts, including Bedfordshire, were created, the reduction in number brought about by the amalgamation of some Areas.

To achieve trust status Bedfordshire had to meet stringent tests to prove that it was strong on:

  • Local accountability and engagement
  • Operational performance
  • Use of resources
  • Operational capability

As a trust Bedfordshire will work increasingly closely with partner agencies in the public, voluntary and private sectors in its work to reduce re-offending. It will also be working within a competitive and Best Value environment. With the exception of services to the Courts other providers may compete for contracts, and Bedfordshire will have to continually prove it has earned the right to continue providing probation services.
