In Spring 2009, Bedfordshire Probation was part of a national campaign, Justice Seen Justice Done, which was designed to raise awareness of Community Payback and encourage members of the public to get involved.
People living in Luton were asked to vote on which of five projects, suggested by Luton Borough Council members, they would like to see take place first.
The projects – and what has happened to them since – are detailed below.
The winner: Taylor Street carpark
This site was often been used for illegal encampments and was an eyesore in the centre of High Town. The work of clearing litter and rubbish and cutting back overgrown vegatation began in May, with offenders working one day each week, and the site continues to be maintained by offenders on Community Payback.
Rear of Wolfsburg Court, Hockwell Ring
An area of land backing onto social housing and often used for fly-tipping which needed clearing of rubbish and vegetation.
This project also began in May and the area continues to be maintained by offenders.
Riverside at Montague Avenue
This is an area which is overgrown and is often used by criminals. If the vegetation was cut back and the area cleaned up, it would be much more user-friendly and attractive for day-to-day use by the local community.
Work on this project starts in October and offenders will be working alongside a team from Luton Borough Council.
The Mayor of Luton, Cllr Mohammed Riaz, saw the scheme in action, when he visited the site on Tuesday, 13 October 2009.

Kingsland Road
Situated to the rear of Strathmore Avenue Methodist Church and overlooked by high rise flats, this was a jungle of vegetation and litter. Work on this site began in July and is ongoing one day per week.
Manor Road Park
Situated in the South Luton Ward, the River Lea and its bank needed care and attention to turn it into a superb recreational area.
This project was eventually handed over to Luton Borough Council to take care because of the complexity of the work involved.
